How are they sustainable?
Yankey Farms is a market produce farm in Prince William County, offering healthy foods for purchase and fun activities for families, for example their annual pumpkin patch and strawberry picking. To ensure both safe and sustainable foods, Yankey Farms blends both traditional and organic farming, using fertilizers like manure, compost, and cover crops with their commercial fertilizers, to help maintain the water quality of nearby streams. To minimize erosion and poor soil quality, the farm made the decision to use herbicides for pest control as opposed to over-tilling the soil. In approach to integrated pest management, the farm utilizes a variety of tactics, including crop rotation, companion planting, crop timing, and row covers, to minimize the need for using insecticides. The farm also uses a few GMO crops, but strictly for the purpose of minimizing the need for using insecticide, which could damage the local environment and ecosystems. |
